August flowers

It’s the first of the asters this week. Say it quietly, but these are a late-summer flower and so are an indicator of the gradual shift towards Autumn. These ones are annuals so need to be grown from seed each year but you can also get perennial asters that come back each year, such as Michaelmas daisies or ‘September’ that are a useful addition to the garden for autumn colour in a flower bed. We’ve also got new season statis which is another late summer flower and is a good one for drying. This has been expertly grown by Hannah who has a 3 acre plot and who you may have seen on Countryfile last year when they did a special programme featuring British flower growers.
