First of the season narcissi
Share
Originally introduced by the Romans, these fragrant mini daffs are harvested in the Isles of Scilly from October to March where flower-farming has been part of the economy for over 150 years. These first few bunches have been brought over by plane, but once the season gets going properly they are brought over by boat. The climate is mild and not prone to frosts which makes it ideal for growing winter flowers outdoors. Other growers can be found from Cornwall to Scotland providing a later succession of blooms the further north you go.
In the Dig for Victory years, more growing land was needed for edible crops, so fields were stripped of their flowers. Daffodil bulbs such as the 'Fortune' variety which sold for £50 a bulb were tipped onto verges and these can still be seen today.
Incredibly Britain produces 90% of the world's daffodils!
