Cute black puppy in the flower cutting garden with astrantia

June: the longest, loveliest days!

We’re into June and the New Forest cutting garden is alive with bees on the astrantia, painted ladies on the alliums, pheasants scratching in the wood chip and the new puppy Bo to shoo off the beds! I spotted another white-tailed eagle this month as well, this time riding the thermals out to sea. So exciting to feel them getting established on the South Coast.

The sweet williams and peonies are coming to an end and the summer drummer alliums are getting started, along with alchemilla mollis, nigella, delphiniums, snapdragons and agapanthus. Our June posies will be almost entirely made with South-West-grown flowers, with perhaps the odd peony from Lincolnshire, tied by hand the morning they go out.

June is also British Flower Week (16–22 June) and an opportunity to reflect that around 85% of all cut flowers sold in the UK are imported, most flown into The Netherlands from countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia and Ecuador before being transported on to the UK. MeadowSweet Posies is a small family business with a strong belief that Britain should be more self-sufficient in how it grows its flowers. Doing this supports British growers, helps look after our environment and minimises ‘flower miles’. British Flower Week could be the perfect moment to start a British flower subscription with us if you’ve been thinking about it.

We’ll also be out and about this month: at the New Forest Business Show, Richmond Duckpond Market, and providing table centres for charitable events for The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy and Marwell Wildlife. Come and say hello.
