Are cut flowers safe for cats and dogs?

What flowers are toxic to pets? Many plants naturally contain bitter-tasting toxins to deter animals and insects from eating them. A lot of plants can give pets (and people!) a tummy ache if they eat enough of them. This is nature's way of saying 'keep off' and it is usually an effective way to stop animals and people from eating them again. These plants have evolved such a strategy so that they can be left alone to grow and reproduce successfully. Some plants are more toxic than that, and they can affect different animals in different ways. For example, if consumed, eucalyptus leaves are toxic to cats but they are breakfast, lunch and dinner for a koala! Curiously, some plants that we eat may still be harmful...

Platty Jubes!

It's the Platinum Jubilee I'm looking forward to the extra-long bank holiday weekend. Could it possibly be that we'll even get nice weather for it...In celebration, this week is a red, white and blue theme. Red thanks to the spectacular red charm peonies and sweet williams. White plus lots of fragrance from the stocks and (white) pinks. The blue was the trickiest as our cornflowers are not out yet but our love in a mist came to the rescue plus bright blue Cornish brodiaea. The posies include a complimentary packet of wildflower mix. These are mixed with a natural substrate to help sprinkle them evenly. You can sprinkle and cover them if you have a spare patch in the garden...

It's a first for MeadowSweet!

British lisianthus! Top quality British lisianthus this week from a three generation grower in Suffolk. The nursery has 1.6ha under glass and uses a waste straw biomass boiler when required. I've not been able to source British lisanthus before so it's exciting to use it. Lisianthus is such an elegant flower with a rose-like bud and it comes in a range of mouthwatering colours.Next week is the extended Jubilee Bank Holiday and so deliveries will be on Wednesday 1st June rather than the usual Friday. The posies will have a red, white and blue theme and come with a complimentary pack of wildflower seeds for you to sprinkle! If you'd like a Jubilee posy or maybe like to send one...

What do Shirley Temple and coral have in common?

Two types of peony Warm temperatures and downpours this week have brought everything on quickly in the garden. We planted a lot of seedlings at the plot over the weekend including zinnia, sweet williams, cornflowers, cosmos, carnations, sweet peas, antirrhinum, and stocks and some have put on a lot of growth already. The coral peonies in this week's posy are popping open before our eyes. There's another peony variety tucked in there too called Shirley Temple, a double rose pink bloom. These ones are a lot tighter so should take a little longer to open up. Keep a look out!I'm going to be creating another yellow and blue themed posy for delivery 10th June. All proceeds from the sales will...

Flowers for Ukraine

How can I help Ukraine with flowers? Blue for the sky and yellow for the fields of wheat, Ukraine's flag is colourful and distinctive. With the crisis in Ukraine continuing and with your help, I have decided to dedicate another posy week to support the humanitarian crisis. I will create a blue and yellow British flower posy for delivery date June 10th 2022. As before, all proceeds will go to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. In February, the blue and yellow British flower posy featured daffodils, mimosa, tulips and blue hyacinth. I'll have to get my thinking cap on as to what best summer flowers to use. Maybe cornflowers, iris, delphiniums, sunflowers... We'll just have to see what's ready for picking that week! If you'd like to receive...
